December 31, 2011 at 11:53 AM“I do feel like the lesson discussion is a full level or more above the lesson itself. Am I truly the only one that feels this way?”
。。。firstly I'm slightly unclear what you're referring to with "lesson discussion" and "lesson itself". These terms referring to the different parts of the podcast can be so similar as to lead to confusion. Let's say on average a higher level podcast goes for 15 minutes. Well this will consist of 2 lots of say 2 minute "dialogues"...对话, which leaves the bulk of the podcast [in this example 11 minutes] as the teachers "discussion". Going by the way I'd put it, are you thus saying that the dialogues themselves are a level above the teachers discussions? [if so, then I think you're saying the same as Zhen. I also would tend to agree...the new words are in the dialogue whereas the teachers explanations contain simpler language and usually follow quite a pattern as Zhen has suggested].Have you transcribed dozens of dialogues?....if so, that's very interesting, as I was just wondering earlier if anyone did that. I guess you've done it for your own benefit and not published them anywhere?...as above I guess there would be no point publishing them as we already have the dialogue tabs, right?

...he would definitely support that. I remember having quite a discussion with him about them early in my time here with him exhorting me to get a paper dictionary [as opposed to relying on the electronic ones].

December 31, 2011 at 7:43 AM"ChinesePod did them then I wonder if any poddies would bother?"
for mine....no. What would be the point? Does anyone transcribe the dialogues now when they are there in the pdf or dialogue tab? [do basic subscribers get the pdf btw?]
"Anyway, there is zero chance that ChinesePod will change its take on this. "
...firstly, I wouldn't put it at zero chance, and secondly, do we have their official take on it? I know they think sink or swim, but does that mean they have given us a no, never answer...a formal answer to whether they'd produce transcripts? Again, personally it doesn't bother me, but I'm curious having read your comment

December 31, 2011 at 12:05 PM“Its not the big words that cause problems, its the small ones”
。。。definitely. I'm wondering whether you'd be interested in collaborating on a transcript mate? Seems to me that those who try realise the benefit to listening comprehension. For me it's almost always the smallest and simplest of words that can be hard to catch. But it definitely gets easier after a while. Here I would respectfully disagree with our mate Bodawei. Sure there's no rewind button in life and nothing like real speaking practice, but the thing is when you hone your listening, you have a better shot at picking it up first time next time or when talking with a native live. I do get his point though...extrapolation, work arounds, all that are also useful skills. I think you want to try and bring as many skills to the table as you can. But if you can learn to catch more and more, then I think there's less guess work and extrapolation. But to each there own of course. Just my 2 fen.
