weibuo,

I was singing "Ta bu ai wo" by Karen Mok yesterday evening.  It isn't one of my favorite songs though: it's a bit sad.  It is very easy to learn though.

Interesting discussion.  Incidentally, my understanding was that the people who Marco Polo and his father had originally been trading with were Turkish.  There are, of course (if you've been following the news lately), Turkish people living in China to this day.  At one time the capital of China was in Xi An which is smack dab in the middle of modern China so I would imagine that interaction between the Han Chinese and Western minorities would have had a significant impact on the development of culture in both the East and West.  Oh and of course much of South East Asia is Muslim as a result of Arab traders spreading their religion: I understand that Marco Polo, after leaving China, did also visit South East Asia and Arabia upon the recommendation of the Kahn Emperor.

Are most of the singers in Mainland China male?  I'm here in Taiwan and the most popular singer right now is Jolin Tsai, although the male singers Jay Cho and Wang Lihom are also popular as is the girl group S.H.E.  Young people in Taiwan do like singers from outside Taiwan too (for example, Stephanie Sun from Singapore, Karen Mok from Hong Kong and Fish Leong from Malaysia) but I'm not familiar with any Mainland Chinese singers: the only one I know is Wu Bao and that's because he did this amazing duet with Karen Mok, Jinqiang de Liyou (Strong Reason).  Karen Mok also did a duet Guanglao zhi Lian (Hiroshima Love) but I don't remember the name of the other singer.

My personal favorite songs are Ai Ni (Love You) by Cyndi Wang and Aimei (Ambiguity) by Rainie Yang.  I did Karaoke with friends a while ago and sang Wo Hui Haohaodi (I'll be okay) and Yue Guang (Moonlight) by Cyndi Wang, Ningmeng Cao de Weidao (The Smell of Lemon Grass) and Jiushi Ai (Really Love) by Jolin Tsai and Aimei by Rainie Yang and everybody was really surprised.  I tried to sing Qingchu (Celebration) by Rainie Yang but I choked because the song is a bit fast: I think I'd want to try that one again if I have the chance.

I practice singing Chinese songs by going to youtube.  I sing more than 200 songs a week, although often I can't find a Karaoke version of a song I like so I end up not knowing what the song is about but at least I can use my dictionary and find out what the title means and that at least gives me some context.  Besides the ones I mentioned above, I like Dang Ni (When You), Baby Baby Tell Me, Beauty, Honey, Diyi Ci Aide Ren (First Lover) and Zhe Jiushi Ai (This is Really Love) by Cyndi Wang, Jueding Ai Ni (Decided to Love You) and Henhen Ai (Vicious Love) by Vivian Hsu, Mr. Q, Aiqing 36 Jiyi (36 Ways of Winning Love), Love Love Love and Hao Xiang Ni (Miss You So Much) by Jolin Tsai, Renyi Men (Arbitrary Door) and Zhi Xiang Ai Ni (Just Want to Love You) by Rainie Yang, L.O.V.E., Wo Ai Ni Name Duo (I Love You So Much) and Yibeizi Zuo Nide Nuhai (I Just Want to Be Your Girl) by Elva Hsiao, AiNi Shi Wode Ziyou (Loving You is my Freedom) and Hao Xinqing (Good Mood) by Coco Lee, 24 Hrs, Ruguo Meiyou Ni (If I Didn't Have You), Aiqing (Lover) and Zhende Ma (Really?) by Karen Mok and Ai Zuida (Biggest Love), Huo (Fire), Jiemei (Sister), Ku buchulai (Tears Won't Come), So Good, Wo Yao Fei (I Want to Fly), Wo Yao Kuaile (I Want Happiness) and Yongyuan de Kuaile (Forever Happiness) by Ai Mei.  Sorry but I can't easily provide links (or even type in Chinese, at least not using this computer).
