I like this kind of dialogue especially the set polite phrases which could be helpful but it may be more helpful to have a social networking environment that does not revolve around academia. For most poddies a more professional work-oriented situation at a conference or meeting might be more helpful.

Thanks!

great explanation and distinction between these various words in a clear way, I wish though that there was more impromptu discussions about the cultural examples related to these words in mainland China and/or Taiwan (since Chinesepod is now based there). What I liked about the old qingwens was that mixture of clear explanations and examples with culturally relevant content for utilizing and contextualizing the grammar point/phrases discussed.

真感谢!

I know I am over 5 years behind responding to this lesson but I really liked this one. Seems like a classic from the previous Chinesepod crew. Would like to hear from the female perspective on this issue as well if the new Chinesepod crew could oblige.

Posted on: Do I Need To Learn Chinese Characters?
November 03, 2014, 09:43 PM

When I was first learning characters, I downloaded a list of 1000 most common characters in Chinese, printed them out and turned each individual character into a flash cards. It was a good way for creating a base for character recognition.

Also I lived in China and would just try to read all the signs around me which helped reinforce them. Though most people learning Chinese don't have that luxury.

I too have found that it is so easy to forget how to write characters but easy to recognize them after seeing over and over again. Also learning about the piece of the characters (radicals) can help you sharpen your ability to distinguish between characters that look a lot alike.

I do practice writing to help me recognize and remember characters but it's so easy to forget how to write them.
