September 16, 2007 at 3:45 PMOne of the guys I went to China with was a car salesman from Texas. For Americans, that's the pinnacle of a wheeler-dealer/bargainer. He told me what he was going to do ahead of time then went into the store and did it. It was amazing. If you have 20 minutes or so, and no conscience, try what he did: He picked up some jade statue that was priced at 250 rmb, and he went to the shopkeeper and offered 5 (yes, 5, not a typo). The vendor was aghast, blew him off. He offered 5 a couple more times until the shopkeeper finally got pissed then he walked away. EVERY time another customer came in, he would interupt the vendor and the customers and offer 5, then the next group would come in and he offered 6, ruining the negotiations between the vendor and the other people. After he ambushed a few groups of people like that. The vendor sold it for 8 RMB just to get him out of the store.
