Was this alleged malady purported to have been contagious? What was the supposed root cause? (I will never go swimming again.) I have found these types of medical myths and "beliefs" a form of superstition, and very hard to dispel. You're sure this thing isnt real now, right?

Purveyor of bad news? Are you not doing exactly what you warned against when you said don't assume that English speakers all over the world speak like Americans.
Doesnt this work both ways? The differences in how English is spoken are interesting, and I am hungry to learn and be aware of them, but we must stay mindful that they exist. Both of us. Besides, the population of English speakers in UK + Australia is only around 85 million. There are over 310 million people in the US contributing to any "lexicon" - We win. :-) (Im just pulling your feathers here) Everybody would like to think their way is the right way, but the truth is, we are both right. It just depends on where you are.
