January 2, 2008 at 11:05 AMso to greet someone you could say "wanshang hao" but "wan an" would be more like "good night" as in goodbye until morning, kiss your girl goodnight kind of thing?

January 2, 2008 at 9:29 AMThanks Panda2 and Ken. I always have trouble with the xia - shang thing. Even as it relates to next week or last week. It always seems counterintuitive to me. Before and below should match (to my western way of thinking) and last week should be before or below week not "above". It is interesting how many things are mirror images in East vs West. I made a list once and its almost as if this difference is built right into nature and driven by geography. They even considered using red for "go" on traffic signals in China at one time (red being a positive color there) but decided against it. The differences are in fact just a coincidence though - arent they?

December 31, 2007 at 9:53 AMThanks Henning, Wildyaks- it seems you are correct. I had forgotten the comment about the 3 kingdoms period. So we answered Clays question. "is this the same guy that the chicken is named after? How many General Tso's could there be?" Well evidently the chicken guy is not the same as the General that inspired the saying 说曹操, 曹操到. Thats one thing I love about Cpod. You cant get away with any sloppy journalism ;-).

January 2, 2008 at 12:05 PMI noticed you call it "take away" where the expression in the US is "take out" or "to go". You order the food to take it out of the restaurant and eat it at home. To order "in" usually means you are at home and you order food to be delivered to you so you can eat in, as opposed to having to go out.
