August 31, 2011 at 9:40 AMIsn't "tan" also a verb which means to play a chorded instrument like a piano or a violin, chords being very flexible. That seems to be a good way of remembering the meaning as an adjective - this is how it's used in this lesson am I right?

December 7, 2010 at 6:24 PMVery interesting lesson. It'd be useful to examine other festivals as they come around for example the Muslim Eid and the Hindu Divali and Holi. Any plans for doing this?

August 6, 2010 at 8:01 AMI listened to the dialogue first and, as is fairly common in the Chinese Pod boyfriend/girlfriend, husband/wife conversations, the woman sounded really bad-tempered, whining, even a little aggressive, wanting her partner to do everything for her while the partner takes it all lying down. However, when I read the dialogue the woman sounded perfectly reasonable in her remarks and requests. So she just sounded like she was in a foul mood but she wasn't really. Is that so?Does the way the women speak in the dialogues reflect reality? Should I try to cultivate this way of speaking to sound more Chinese? If so, it's going to be really difficult.

May 17, 2009 at 4:38 PMIs it a fairly new practice in China to dress baby boys in blue and baby girls in pink (as in the photo)? I read about a study which showed that these two colours don't have the same connotations in China as they do in the US and Europe for example.

March 20, 2009 at 7:25 AMWas that the late, great John Campbell getting together with Jackie Chan in the background number?

March 1, 2009 at 12:35 PMYes, I know it might be difficult but please explain the "nod" in more detail. I'll never forget Jet Li's terse nod to his girlfriend in "Fist of Legend" when she revealed she'd seriously put her reputation on the line by giving him a cast-iron alibi (she said they'd spent the night together) and got him off a charge. Was he just really embarassed or was that nod enough? I expected him at least to ask her to marry him.

November 14, 2011 at 10:50 AMJust a cultural question. Do Chinese women have so little respect for their feet (a fundamental part of the body - if they're not comfortable then nothing is) that they send their menfolk to buy their shoes for them? Is this common or just a situation dreamed up for the purposes of the lesson?
