I'm quite impressed by all of you non-native English speakers. English is a much more difficult language than Chinese. 12 tenses, verb conjugation, prepositions that seem to follow no logical rule, collocations, regular and irregular verbs, not a phonetic language, not being able to independently learn how to read most words without having mastered some international phonetic alphabet.... and the list goes on. Not to mention that many of you non-native English speakers are learning Mandarin as a 3rd+ language. I'd love to be able to speak more languages.

The thing I really dislike about training new Chinese colleagues is the first initial confrontation / meeting in which they learn that I can speak Chinese. It's always followed by a boat-load of questions I've heard a thousand and one times, as pulosm noted.

I highly recommend Yu Hua, Su Tong and Mo Yan. Those three will give you a good start on post-Mao China. You can also look through the Columbia Anthology of Modern Chinese Literature, which covers everything from Lu Xun forward. These are all available off amazon.

I've been out to dinner a number of times and have yet to fight over the bill. However, about a month ago at hot pot I saw two friends actually get into a fist fight over the bill. Granted they had consumed a lot of alcohol prior, but still, a bit extreme.

Most of the baidu.com results relate 寺 with Buddhist temples: http://www.baidu.com/s?wd=%CB%C2&cl=3 Perhaps, just as there are many different denominations of Christianity, all of which pray in churches, so may there be many different sects of Buddhists that pray / worship in 寺庙.

I don't take kindly to people that cast magic spells to make me think that all fat ugly women are beautiful goddesses....

I guess it all depends on what type of learner you are. I'm very visual, so the CPod-provided flashcards and memory game work wonders for me. You might want to give it a try. =)
