Interesting. Don't worry, I'm not looking for an argument. Just curious about your experience.

Yeah, it seems that right now it's all about one's strategy to avoid the crowds. I'm going to keep waiting a bit longer before going.

Condescending how? I have a friend covering the Expo as a journalist, and he said it was one of the few pavilions (the only pavilion?) manned by non-Chinese volunteers that actually spoke (relatively fluent) Chinese.

No, the 还 in 还以为 doesn't mean "also," because you'll often found this statement made as a response where "also" wouldn't make sense. Example:

A: 我是男的。

B: 噢,我还以为你是女的呢!

So, yes, it does serve the purpose of emphasis, as you guessed. (This is a question I remember specifically wondering about at one point, and then asking, just as you did.)

The 还发现 example is more of an "also" usage, but 还以为 is somewhat special.

There are lots of examples in the glossary entry for 好像. Enjoy!

You're right, though... 好像 is quite broad.

Now that's service! :)

Did you continue browsing my candlelight? (That's some romantic shopping!)

The files are downloading fine here, and if they work in China, they tend to work very well elsewhere. It can be a little inconvenient using Amazon's hosting sometimes, but for the most part it's very dependable.

Can you download the lesson files now?

That's a really good idea. I've met a lot of foreigners here in China that work for NGOs.
