March 26, 2019 at 1:19 AMThose are good points. Actually, when we were recording the lesson, Jenny said yǎyì a couple of times, and I wasn't sure what she was talking about. It took me a while to figure it out! Now I know.
When I realized what was happening, I was actually quite encouraged that I've become familiar enough with tones to be confused when hearing a tone I wasn't expecting. For the longest time, I didn't know if I would ever be able to discern tones.

March 22, 2019 at 1:12 AMYou've stumbled into a controversial topic! I've had discussions with Chinese people about this, and the two terms 字 and 词 have a lot of overlap, and in many cases can be used interchangeably. Some people, however, insist that 字 is a single Chinese character, whereas 词 is a word, usually consisting of more than one character.
I have a comment above about how Chinese-language software uses the word 字 in relation to word count.
