September 30, 2018 at 10:07 PM“油腻”is a useful one to know. I just found a funny chart listing out the 10 different levels of 油腻-ness. There’s also a song about discovering that you’ve become a 油腻大叔. What can I say? The belly and the hair are real issues, but at least I don’t have 佛珠 hanging from my car mirror!

September 19, 2018 at 5:51 PMFrom what I understand, 猪狗不如 is often used to describe someone who has done something unspeakably wicked. This morning I saw a headline about a couple suspected of drugging and raping many women. Could I say, 这两个人真是猪狗不如！
For 鸡犬不宁... America currently has a president who is good at getting people stirred up. Could I say, "特朗普一上Twitter，全国就闹得鸡犬不宁"?

September 19, 2018 at 5:37 PM我在上海工作的时候，我的一个同事的电脑被中招了。我们的网管也不懂电脑（但是他一直是一个很友好的一个人！），同事就找我研究一下怎么处理。最后发现是rootkit（不知道中文怎么说），很厉害的病毒。还好网上有很多免费的杀软，也有很有用的说明怎么处理，否则可怜的同事的电脑肯定完蛋了。

“对不起，我们卖完了。”
这句话的“了”应该读：
A. leB. liaoC. 都行
Here are the responses:
A: 12
B: 1
C: 5
One of my tutors (who chose C) said this: "liao是更口语的感觉，有点开玩笑的意思". Another tutor (who chose C) said this: "我觉得正确的是le, 但是真的有中国人读liao."
My former listening teacher (who chose A) had this to say:
如果是：我们卖了了。第一个“了”读liao,第二个读le ; Liao是“完”的意思
吃不了 的意思是 吃不完，所以读Liao
去不了 是不能去， 也读liao
The 系主任 of the Chinese department where I went to school was kind enough to give a rather lengthy audio reply, in which she said the only correct choice is A. The bottom line is: when 了 is said "liao" it means 完. So, if 完 is followed by 了, it can only be “le," not "liao."

I remember my first boss back in the U.S. saying something about giving me a “shout out,” and I was a bit alarmed, having no idea what he meant. I ran into tons of problems like that. Reverse culture shock.
