Back in June, there was a lesson on The New Co-Worker, and it was then followed by a separate video lesson on the characters from the dialogue. I thought that was a great idea. There are lots of Chinese language learning tools out there, and I find the most helpful ones to be the ones that do the best job getting things integrated like that.

Yes, that’s right. His English name is David, and he started at ChinesePod around 2007. His last lesson was December 2014, which is here:https://chinesepod.com/lessons/“停用死囚器官”的伦理与法治进步

He started out as a sound engineer, and significantly raised the quality of the dialogues before he began writing and teaching lessons.

This 3-part story is almost entirely his work:

扎着麻花辫的女孩1

扎着麻花辫的女孩2

扎着麻花辫的女孩3

I’m a big fan of the old stuff.cool

Agreed that the expansion sentences are read too slowly on this one, especially as a pre-intermediate.

Thanks, matman1115! It was a real pleasure being part of this lesson. One of the things that has impressed me most in my direct contact with the new staff is how open their ears really are. I've had peeks into other things they're working on, and although I'm not "in the know" on any kind of time table, they definitely are hard at work on new material. They have been taking quite seriously the comments on quality. They very much want to do it right.

I see the exercises on my computer, but I do recall that some of the lessons this year didn't have Exercises when originally posted.

MayHaNN,

I had a look at the exercises on this lesson, and actually, believe it or not, they are correct for this level - but it should not come as a surprise that they are super hard for you right now. Each of the 4 parts of the exercises come from different parts of the lesson: The "Matching" section is from the Vocabulary, the "Sentence Re-Ordering" is from the Dialogue, and both the "Dictation" and "Multiple Choice" come from the Expansion sentences. All of the multiple choice sentences came straight off of the Expansion tab for this lesson.

When you first begin a level, some parts of the lesson are significantly harder than others. Since the Expansion sentences aren't actually part of the lesson, those are incredibly difficult (impossible?) for someone new at a particular level. Don't let that bother you. As you progress through Newbie lessons, those sentences will get easier and easier, until they start to annoy you because of how easy they are. When that happens, it's a good sign that you are near graduating to the next level.

For now, when you get to the matching, just look back at the Expansion sentences for the answers. No need for a dictionary.

Also, don't let the age of this lesson put you off, either. All of my favorite lessons are from the 2008-2014 era. Some of them are downright hysterical!

Hello MayHaNN, and welcome to the world of Chinese learning!

I'm glad the interview was encouraging. I'm also glad to hear that you're going to give the HSK a try. I've heard of Zero to Hero before, but never had any experience with it. After you've used it for a while, would you mind coming back here and letting us know about your experience with it?

Good luck on the HSK 1!
