I don't know, I've never lived there. However, in the south west a student will say either 打工 or 工作。。Hope that helps. In regard to migrant workers they will say either I've heard both spoken to me. My ex's parents were 農民工 during the 80's and 90's.

Alternatively:

This sentence from Constance is a crack up and illustrates that the girl she is talking about has a potential psycho stalker for a boyfriend:

The latter is a loan word, which I've never come across before. The former two mean lottery tickets, of which the latter is most commonly spoken. 彩券is also commonly used (on shop signs that sell them in both Taiwan and mainland China).

打工 is to do part time work.農民工 is migrant( from the countryside, peasant) workers. Since most農民工 have full time jobs (not temporary or casual) they cannot be said to打工, rather they have工作, which in most instances require them to sign簽 a contract of employment(勞動)合同.

Really? Please peruse the above comments(user1283).

I'm not suggesting, but instead making a rather obvious observation.

And I'll make another: I'm sure people on both sides of the strait will happily point out local variations of terminology for your benefit, and learning. It's really no big deal. One person's 土豆 is another's 花生。

However, you make a good suggestion that Cpod, in order to retain sooky customers, may want to look into providing the most common Mainland variation as well.

To say that mainland people won't understand Taiwanese variations is to imply that they have no brains at all. There are so many local variations of accent, terminology, and slang in China that to suggest Chinese won't understand Taiwanese variations is absolutely absurd. And to whinge about these variations implies that Mandarin has a degree of difficulty beyond the reach of those participating in such sookery. Learn another language perhaps?

Here's a fact whinging sooks may want to consider: Mandarin is a second language for the far majority of Chinese, and for most Taiwanese.

And here's a suggestion that may be of much greater personal benefit than being a sook: Why not embrace such diversity and learn something new?
