This is a link to a blog by Aaron and Danielle Reiner:

They are a teaching couple from the United States who are currently in Japan teaching English. Their blog reminds me of John Pasden's great blog, “Sinosplice”, and I thought John and changye and others with cross cultural interests involving both China & Japan might relate to their experiences. I find that by reading the Chinese characters on the Japanese signs I get a clue as to what they might be saying.

Hi Mexicobob! I once had a Japanese friend who taught me some 新字體...新字體 are 簡體字 with completely different strokes.... It tends to get confusing when trying to understand them through their characters.

For example:

龍 in Japan is written as 竜

廣 as 広

澀 as 渋

etc.

So, I have to tell him to write in 舊字體(繁體字) sometimes.

Well that's my experience with the Japanese language.
