Simple 的 use question.

I know if I am refering to a friend I can say 我朋友 instead of 我的朋友。 But can I say 我是他朋友 instead of 我是他的朋友？

I vote yes you can!  I'm pretty sure I have heard it before, and there was 1,200,000 occurences of it on the google search I did.  But of course I don't really know.
