My name is chris in Phx, Arizona. I'm excited about this group because I'm a Christian myself and it would be so exciting to learn how to read the Bible in Chinese!!

changye,

It's very much the same here in the US.  I guess the "generation gap" and all that goes with it is a universal phenomenon!

Hi vagabondpilgrim

There are several Japanese translation versions of Bible. Some employ rather classical writing styles, and the newest version employs a colloquial style. I think younger generations prefer easy-to-read Bible, but old guys would prefer old-fashioned styles probably becasue they sound more "solemn" and "religious".

Just out of curiosity, has anyone explored the different Chinese translations?

By far the most popular version is the "tried and true" Union translation (that Bazza has used) which has been around for awhile, but some complain that it uses some old language which makes it somewhat difficult to read.  I suppose it could be compared to the KJV for folks in the US.

Other more modern versions have been met with varying degrees of acceptance.  I was surprised to find that the same story of differing versions that we have seen in the west was also being played out in China.

this is the one I got from bazza. I prefer King James version (at least in English).

I see no reason why someone could not run a group to translate the Bible. As long as there is no preaching or proselytizing, just translation, it should not be a problem. It would be no different from translating any other book. The Bible is beautifully written. I have read it more than once. I have also read the Koran, albeit in English.

Really?

And I was thinking that Bazza had just gotten too busy...

I'd love to see this group reform, though!

Chris, I'm not necessarily a member of this group, but I can tell you that it became defunct.  There was a somewhat intolerant poddie that complained about this group in a now-deleted post.  However, I think a Bible-study (or Koran-study, Sutra-study, whatever) group focused on Chinese would be a worthy addition to the community.
