December 09, 2008 at 06:00 AM posted in General DiscussionAs the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949 next year will probably bring quite a number of festivities, events etc.
Are there any things to watch out for (new theme parks, newer and bigger statues or buildings)?
Do foreign visitors have to be aware of certain dates? (Apart from october 1st?)
Will Chinesepod have some promotions because of it - err...?

tvan: Some sort of promotion would be alright with me. :-)
As I'll probably go to China on a vacation next year, I just wanted to avoid something especially awkward or take advantage of something special only happening that year.
I wasn't in China in 1999, but know people who told me of celebrations then.
What about people born on Oct. 1st, 1949? Do they get a special treat, perhaps? (Despite being born in the year of the bull.)

Joachim, the "CPod Celebrates the Triumph of the Proletariat and Socialism with Chinese Characteristics" promotion? I'm guessing somebody's subscription renews around then.
Changye, I've never tried Chinese zodiac-based analysis, but I hope you're right. Somehow "Year of the Rat" conveys exactly how I feel about my portfolio right now.

The next year, 2009, is 己丑 (ji3chou3, Year of the Bull) in 干支. More specifically speaking, it's 己丑,土土,比和. Both 己 and 丑 represent "阴" (negative) in 阴阳思想 (Yin Yang thought) and 土 (a turn of the season) in 五行思想 (Five elements). 土土 is categorized into "比和", and it means "a good thing gets better, and a bad thing gets worse". Gee, it doesn't seem that 2009 is a good year. But don't worry, it's a bull year. I hope that stock markets all over the world will be bullish next year, haha!

Hi Joachim
I don't know of anything special going on in 2009. But 60 year cycles are traditionally very important in China, as they are based on the interactions of the 天干 Heavenly Stems and 地支 Terrestrial Branches.
This wikipedia article has some more details.

Is there any confirmed information on big exercises or parades this year? After last years Olympics I would have thought that there'd be other things than military displays etc.
I understand that there will be a special gala directed by Zhang Yimou.
