Forbidden City

Could somebody please translate the chinese characters on the front wall of the Forbidden City surrounding the portrait of Chairman Mao. I have heard that they are changed periodically. Is that true?

It seems the latter of the two is not unlike the slogan for the 2008 Olympics. One World, One Dream.

The slogans I have seen are: Long live the People's Republic of China! and Long live the Great Unity of the Peoples of the World! 中华人民共和国万岁！ and 世界人民大团结万岁！ I think it has been the same words in the 30+ years I've been watching.
