Beijing,Fangshan: local knowledge?

I'm really looking forward to my first visit to China at the end of September (for the CG2008 conference). We'll have to see if anyone understands my newbie-level Mandarin!

The conference and hotel are in Fangshan, Beijing. Is this a good place to be for sightseeing (I seem to be free from 1pm each day) or is it the middle of nowhere?

Any other advice is welcome, including must-have/must-avoid guide books and maps.
