Learn Chinese Characters on the iPhone

February 28, 2008 at 09:22 PM posted in General DiscussionI just saw this application pop up in my endless list of tech related news. Not having an iPhone I haven't been able to try it, but if someone gives it a go and gives it a glowing review I might just be persuaded that I need to give Apple yet more money. I need a new mp3 player after all.
From the site:
"Designed as a native iPhone application, iChinese will train you writing and reading of Chinese characters. iChinese' lessons are based on well-known training courses, like "Practical Chinese Reader". Taking advantage of the iPhone's unique touch interface, you can train writing Chinese characters whereever you go!"

I was considering buying an iPhone purely for this. I think you can also get some CPod features on an iPhone. I don't have 500 quid to spend on a phone though so no mobile character-study for me...

I've seen ones before for Japanese, but I'm not sure I want to play around with jailbreaking yet. I'll hold out hopes for one that will be OK'd by Apple and then up on their website.

We tried the app out here in the ChinesePod office this morning. We have been a little slow with our mobile development, but with the iPhone SDK out soon that should give us some more impetus. Usability of the iChinese app takes some getting used to and it still seems a little buggy, but definitely a good first step. Can't remember the last time I tried to write characters, as opposed to typing them.

Cool app! Yet another reason I want to get an iPhone. I'd also like to hear if this is a good application.
I've been holding out on buying an iPhone until I move to Taiwan. Anyone in Taiwan know when the iPhone will be available there?
