I don't know if you've ever heard of it but it's a famous Canadian children's book published in 1908 by Lucy Maud Montgomery. It was filmed for television in the 1980's.

Anne, the main character, has spent most of her childhood between various orphanages and foster families before she's finally adopted by a pair of elderly siblings, Matthew and Marilla. Until then she's been a very lonely child finding her only comfort in reading and her own imagination so she likes to talk with 'big words'. An important episode is when she meets Diana, a girl who lives close to her, and she immediately asks her not just to be her friend but to be her bosom friend.

The book is very well-written and Anne is such a sweet character that in my mind these words are forever connected to her. Why you think about "Anne of Green Gables" when you hear the word "bosom friends"?

Many people here translate "soulmate" into灵魂伴侣。

whatever, 灵魂伴侣and知己 both have something in common, the one who is your灵魂伴侣or知己have same believe, values, thoughts and opinions with you and you two understand each other very much.

Am I the only one who's immediately reminded of 'Anne of Green Gables' when I hear the words 'bosom friends'?

There are some very interesting conversations there! My suggestion for "知己" - "soulmate" and "知己难寻" - "soulmates are hard to come by" :)

sometimes people say 知己难寻zhi ji nan xun.

知己难寻=It's hard to find a bosom buddy.

Here comes another saying

人生得一知己足矣ren sheng de yi zhi ji zu yi,

It is enought if one can find a bosom buddy in his / her whole life.

I think you can say我很“遗憾”不知道Cpod, or you can say不幸，不幸is the opposite word of 幸运lucky
