The Shanghai luxury market is INSATIABLE. Was buying breakfast today and saw bottles of deluxe milk gracing the shelves. DELUXE. Curiosity aroused, I forked over 3.5 RMB for a small pack.

Tasted just like regular milk.

It wasn't much of a luxury experience, John. Amber was pretty much the only one who saw me drink it. Maybe the point is to leave the empty packaging lying around the office.

@Henning - I've never had milk here that tasted like liquid ashes. But I can heartily recommend you give "Deluxe Milk" a try if you keep running into the problem.

Hennig, I don't think the taste has changed at all, I think we've all just readjusted our concept of what "normal milk" should taste like.

If it really tasted like regular milk that would be pure and unrestrained luxury in China, wouldn't it?

Most milk I got in Beijing tasted diluted - and carried that special ash aftertaste. But maybe that changed.

Much like toting around an real LV bag made by the same semi-slave immigrant labor that make the fake LV bags, the extra coin you paid for the Deluxe milk wasn't for the milk, it was for the experience of being seen with the milk. They aren't just selling deluxe milk, they're selling the deluxe milk life.
