I didn't see the game. I'm living in California and don't have cable tv. I sometimes listen to a radio broadcast that originates in Detroit.

Pominville's goal (Buffalo's 2nd) kept a smile on my face even though the outcome was not what I would have liked. Did you see it?

This afternoon's Detroit-Toronto NHL game is being in broadcast in Mandarin, available at www.cbcsports.ca You may need a Canadian IP address to be allowed access. Tonight's Vancouver-Colorado game is being broadcast in Cantonese at the same site.

lordstanley,
Glad to see you bring up the history of women's hockey; check out the vintage photos here: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/hockey/kids/024003-2200-e.html
bingge,
Yes, indeed, the Kings did have Gretzky and Melrose (and Marty McSorley) in the late 1980s/early 1990s -- in fact, I used to interview them all after games. It's how I got my start in journalism!
On a side note, I once sent a picture of me with the Cup to a friend in Shanghai and the response was: "What's that bucket next to you?"

哈哈 - lordstanley - that's funny. I think when women play with men they know what to expect. My friends and I consider it a gesture of respect when the guys treat us the same. (Of course it's okay if the other guys get in an uproar when someone knocks us down, too -hehe- we are still women after all).. I'm sure the Japanese women didn't mind. (I would just shove you back :)
I've never really thought much about the history of women's hockey. I just enjoy playing it, not too much into the history. You've opened my eyes to it :-)

Bingge, I'm not too familiar with the Chinese women's hockey program, but I've actually played hockey against Japanese women. A few of them showed up at the Vancouver rink where I occasionally play pick-up hockey in a "no-contact" league, and since they had skates, sticks, equipment and skated fast, why not let them play. The only weird thing was that although bodychecking was not allowed, a common tactic in our league to keep opposing players from from the puck was to reach out one's hand, grab the opponent's chest and shove them away - the first few times I did that to one of the Japanese females I felt I was breaking a taboo, even though there were a few inches of padding, jersey and glove separating us. Incidentally, women's hockey has a long history, their games used to draw thousands of spectators in the U.S. Pacific NW, Western Canada and Quebec during WWI when male players were fighting overseas.

January 09, 2008 at 06:01 PMGuys - fyi - did you know China has a women's hockey team in Harbin? Check this out. I have some tapes from their last Winter Olympic games. (wonder if they'll take a 老外 who isn't skilled but is very, very tall :^) scotts23 - LA Kings did have Gretzky at some point, right?! That's not too sad. Oh, and don't forget Barry Melrose :) lordstanley - Maybe someday I will be able to read all those links. I'm not that fluent yet :(

Amongst all of you Oilers & Red Wing fans, I'm dealing with a serious case of 史丹利杯 envy. Thank you all though for helping me learn many new characters & tones related to hockey. Now what would the characters/pinyin be for "He shoots, he SCORES!"
Speaking of "Hoser's", would it be appropriate to start a "Strange Brew" thread?

Lord Stanley, I remember the Rocket, but not the comercial. Did you know hosers had a hockey connotation? I looked it up on Wiki... and got this...Hoser is both a slang term and a stereotype, originating from and used primarily in Canada.[1]
Like the very similar term hosehead, it originally referred to farmers of the Canadian prairies, who would siphon gas from farming vehicles with a hose during the Great Depression of the 1930s. The expression has since been converted to the verb 'to hose' as in to trick, deceive, or steal - for example: "That card-shark sure hosed me." Hosed has an additional meaning of becoming drunk - for example: "Let's go out and get hosed."
The term "hoser" refers to an era in hockey before the ice resurfacing machine came into use. The losing team had to hose off the ice. The term "hoser" can then be construed to mean loser.[citation needed]

Obitodd, maybe a Chinesepod referee has sent Amber to the penalty box and charged her with "Two minutes for looking so good". **
** Don't worry, I'm not THAT cheesy - the two minutes line is from a memorable hair cream commercial starring Rocket Richard that aired across Canada in the '80s.

Haha, Bingge. Actually, tons of Wings die-hards who are Canadian. I'd estimate that on any given night at the Joe about 25% are hosers, from Windsor, Chatham, Darren McCarty's Leamington, etc. We're the ones wearing touques instead of "stocking caps". I'm originally from Sarnia, about an hour's drive from the Joe (or 50 minutes if Bob Probert was driving), a town which over the years has pumped out notable Wings coaches and players such as Ted Garvin, Bill Lochead, Harry Neale, Paul Ysebaert, Shawn Burr and Dino Cicarelli. Still listen to Ken & Paul via the Internet and watch Ken & Mickey via Centre Ice. And while finding a whole 章鱼 (zhang1 yu2 octopus) in Vancouver is not always easy, I made sure when I attended the Wings elimination of the Canucks in the 2002 playoffs to bring in some leftover takeout calimari and toss it over the boards. There used to be a Chinese-language Brendan Shanahan tribute Web page somewhere, back when he played for the Wings, and I'll take a look to see if it's still up. I played a ton of hockey in Ontario and Michigan growing up, but also have good memories of playing rooftop ball hockey atop Taipei high-rises. I was also in a bar in China last year - I can't for the life of me recall if it was Beijing or Shanghai - that had a few Canadian bartenders and that would play on its TVs some tapes of recent Hockey Night in Canada games flown over from Canada. Here's a blog post by a Canadian girl about skating indoors in Beijing in the summertime.

mandomikey - I've always liked Buffalo unless they were playing the wings and I always liked Hasek until he came to the wings :) I was sad to see Ozzie go and later Legacy because we acquired Hasek.
I'm so jealous that you got to watch the outdoor game on New Years! That must have been so awesome!

If anyone here is unfortunate enough or misguided enough to be Toronto fans, I'd suggest Googling the Chinese words for "losers" or "joke franchise" and probably something relevant to the Leafs will show up.

Looks like I'm outnumbered here! But I'm glad to see the Dominator having another respectable year in goal ... I always liked Hasek's feistiness when he played for Buffalo. Curious, what is the English breakdown of those characters (史丹利杯)? I don't see 红 anywhere in there.
