John: Hi Intermediate learner's you're listening to ChinesePod, I'm John
Dilu: 你好我是 迪璐. 今天将什么呀？
John: Today we're talking about luck and not just any luck, but bad luck
Dilu: 嗯， 今天有一个人很倒霉
John: So somebody is unlucky, they're having an unlucky day and the word for unlucky here is...
Dilu: 倒霉， 倒霉
John: OK, third tone, second tone
Dilu: 嗯， 那为什么他很倒霉呢？
John: Yeah, so the story is comin' up, let's listen
CoolP, good to see a new person in the Transcripts group, it's been a while since somebody new has come along. Welcome! In respect of your question above, how about you give it a go! The more people transcribing, the merrier :)
John: All-right, so the first line of this little story is what again?
John: So 倒霉 is kind of like a verb right?
John: OK, so your luck isn't good
John: 倒霉。All-right, so what happened to this guy?
John: OK, 昨晚 that's another way of saying...
John: OK, then he's talkin' about a person, who is this person?
John: All-right, this is the word for neighbour, right?
John: OK, and the tones are...
John: OK, 邻居
John: L-I-N right?
John: J-U. OK
John: So practicing playing the drums
John: So playing the drums in Chinese is...
Dilu: 打鼓， 打鼓。Literally it's 'beating the drum'
John: OK, two 3rd tones
John: And then how long?
John: OK, so 直到 is that different from just 到？Like until...
John: OK, so it's like a long time, like continuously playing the drums all the way until 12:30
John: Yeah, without stopping
John: OK, so he didn't sleep well and then...
John: OK, so here we have a pattern. These aren't hard words, but um, notice that in Chinese you kind of repeat them, where you don't have to in English...so these two words I'm talking about are...
John: Right, in English we say 'because something blah blah blah...' or something happened 'so'...
John: But in Chinese you use them both in the same sentence
John: Right, so you don't absolutely have to use them both in one sentence, but you frequently see it that way, right?
John: So because he didn't sleep well 所以 what?
John: OK, so 心情 that's like a mood right?
Dilu: 啊，没错。第一声和第二声， 心情
John: So his mood was bad, he was in a bad mood
John: OK, so 掉了两百块钱 does that mean he dropped 200RMB or he lost 200RMB?
Dilu: 恩，阿，掉这个字的意思呢就是 to drop, 我们常常说掉了钱，那其实就是钱没有了，有可能是 drop, 有可能是你忘记了
John: Or maybe someone even stole it?
John: So 掉 can mean 'drop' but it can also mean 'to lose'
John: OK, so 掉, that's 4th tone right?
John: OK, so he lost 200 RMB and then what happened?
John: OK, 谈生意， so that's 'talking business' right?
John: Like some kind of business negotiations
Dilu: 对，就是跟你的客户在一起讲一些 business-related 事情
John: OK, and you said while they were talking business what happened?
John: So 棒球 that's a baseball right?
John: Suddenly, right?
John: So it suddenly flew in
John: Now we can say 飞了进来 can we also say 飞进来了?
John: OK, so 飞进来 ‘it flew in' 飞了进来 'it flew in'
John: Both work
John: OK, so 客户 that's the client
John: Um, 砸到了客户的脑袋
John: Does that mean like 'smacked the client in the head'?
Dilu: 对啊 ［坏啊］真实的，好痛 [x] 感觉
John: So 砸 can you tell us something about this verb? 2nd tone right? 砸
John: So 砸到，this 砸 can you tell us something about it? Is it like 打 or what is it?
Dilu: 恩，砸其实 [让] 人感觉就是很重的东西
John: Like something's really heavy, hitting pretty hard
John: So it's kind of like 'smack' or 'pound' or 'smash'. Sounds like this guy got hit pretty hard huh?
John: OK and you said 客户的脑袋
John: So 脑袋 that literally means 'brain bag' right?
Dilu: What is a brain-bag? 哈哈
John: 脑 is like a head, brain
Dilu: I know the English
Dilu: Is there like anything called brain-bag in English?
John: No, no
John: OK, so is there a difference between 头 and 脑袋？
Dilu: 恩，阿， 脑袋是一种比较口语的说法
John: OK, so it's pretty informal
John: OK, so it sounds like the business didn't go too well
John: OK, so then what happened that night?
Dilu: 哎呀，misery 阿。因为他的女朋友刚认识了一个鼓手想和他分手
John: OK, so she just met a 鼓手， so this is...
John: 阿， OK, so a Drummer
John: OK, and then he's also worried about whether or not he can get a good nights sleep right?
John: So again the word for 'mood' right, 心情
John: So this time the mood is...
John: OK, now I know the word 烦 means like annoying, frustrating
John: So 烦躁 is that similar?
Dilu:烦躁就是 [zhi] 你脑子里面有很多事情，阿，你也不知到因该怎么办
John: So you're kind of agitated, you're anxious and irritated
John: OK, so this is 烦躁。 That's 2nd tone, 4th tone
Dilu: 对，第二声和第四声， 烦躁。不如说你的妈妈和你的老婆吵架，然后你就不知到因该怎么办，到底帮妈妈还是帮老婆就会很烦躁
John: She's a big girl. All-right, anyway I get what you mean
John: All-right, lets listen to the dialogue one more time
John: All-right, didn't sleep well and then...
John: So lost 200 RMB
John: 阿, the old baseball against the head during the business negotiations. Gotta hate that
John: So his girlfriend broke up with him
Dilu: 恩，挺 [xiang qu] 真的是很倒霉
John: Yeah, so speaking of 倒霉，what kind of unlucky things have happened to you before?
Dilu: To me 啊？
John: What are the classic 倒霉的事情 in Chinese?
John: 哈哈哈，so the classic unlucky thing is to step in dog crap
Dilu: 哦，哎呀 sorry for you
John: So we say 踩到狗屎
John: Step in dog poop
John: Yeah one of the things that happens to me a lot that I always think 真倒霉，is when I'm in a line...
John: You know what I'm gonna say? Like there's two or three lines
John: And my line is really slow
John: Right and so then I switch lines to go to the fast one
John: Exactly, and so you always end up in the slow line and it's your own choice but...
Dilu: 那比如说早上起来的时候发现你的 alarm 坏了已经晚了, 然后你有打车打不到地铁有坏了
John: Yeah, yeah, yeah that is annoying
John: 啊， yes
Dilu: 好，那如果我们的 Poddies 有一些倒霉的经历呢，欢迎来到 chinesepod 留言给我们
John: Yeah, we'll see you on chinesepod.com
