hey cinnamonfern, you're doing a champion job here, but I have a suggestion for you. I can't spot anything you're questioning/ unsure of. You're making this look easy, so it doesn't look like you're stretching yourself. How about going up a level or two next time, and giving that a shot? You might surprise yourself.

yep, it definitely hones the listening. Look forward to working together on an UI then. :)

:) You know...I'm not sure if I'm getting better or if they're getting easier (or they're getting easier because I'm getting better?). But I think listening more closely to these last three podcasts has helped a lot. (That and I'm blitzing the vocabulary at the same time...) I think you're right and it's time to try some Upper Intermediates. :D

Ah! There's one more "de"?! haha

Profile picture

【像】is right. Just like how we'd say in English "do something LIKE these people did"

【那对】is also right. 对 here is a measure word for a husband and wife (a couple) - 一对夫妻.

In the bit after that, "主动的去" the "de" should really be 地 - "主动地去". That's all three kinds of "de" covered in this lesson then.

Dilu: 对对对。啊,虽然说我自己不认识我的隔壁邻居。但是我觉得我们应该【像】这个对话里面的【那对】夫妻去主动的去打招呼。

John: Yeah, it’s a good thing to meet your neighbors. And if you’re a foreigner, you’re kind of allowed to bend the rules a bit and people want to meet you, right?

Dilu: 对啊。那,你今天会去给你的邻居打招呼吗?

John: 我打过了。

Dilu: 哦,那你有没有做蛋糕?

John: 没有。

Dilu: 也许你太太可以给他们做蛋糕。

John: Alright, anyway, so if you guys have any questions or, uh, stories to share, please come to ChinesePod.com and let us have them.

Dilu: 好。那我们下次再见吧。

John: 再见。

Dilu: 对啊。They will think about, like, what did you put there? What do you want from me?

John: But, suppose a foreigner moved in next door and the foreigner actually did this, they would be really happy, right?

Dilu: 那,应该是的吧。那我觉得这个dialogue可能是香港人吧。

John: Oh, so it’s more like a Hong Kong thing.

Dilu: 有可能。至少我在身边好像没有【长的】事情。

John: So anyway, the Twilight Zone element of the lesson is taking somebody’s Western cultural customs and putting them into a Chinese situation.

Dilu: 嗯

John: ..can you explain why I said this is the twilight zone?

Dilu: 那,其实在我身边这种情况很少发生

John: yeah it's weird...it seems like,ah, in modern Chinese culture, at least around a lot of the people I know, um, people don't just go and introduce themselves. There's no a close relationship with the neighbours, right?

Dilu: 不太会,而且我们也不会自己【去】做蛋糕给邻居吃

John: yeah, making a cake for your neighbours is not normal, hah?

John: Yeah, you often hear 我先走了。So this is pretty much the same thing, 我先回去了。So we’ve gotta go now.

Dilu: 是的。那么【局数】我们还有很多要客气的东西要说【呀】。

John: So this is all very polite, cliché language. Alright, so next up is…

John: So in the future, 以后, right, we’re neighbors. We will be neighbors? But they’re neighbors now, right? They already moved in.

Dilu: 这个“以后“指的就是from now on 的意思。

John: 这个 ”以后”是 ‘from now on’.

Dilu: 啊,对的。

John: So we’re neighbors now. From now on we’re neighbors.

Dilu: 嗯。

John: “以后就是邻居了。”

Dilu: 对。”我们以后就是邻居了。互相关照吧。” 哎呀,中国人太可气了。这个邻居还有说:“好,好,互相关照。那我们先回去了。”

John: Okay, so this is when he’s announcing that they’re leaving, which is why they’re not going to go in and have a seat, right? So 先回去了。

Dilu: 对吧。多多关照。那下面还有一个“互相关照”。

John: Okay, so 互相 means like “mutually, doing it for each other”.

Dilu: 啊,是的。

John: So “looking out for each other”, right?

Dilu: 是的。

John: So 互相, what are the tones there?

Dilu: 第四声和第一声。互相关照。

John: Okay, but then right before that there’s another interesting little phrase. What was it?

Dilu: 啊,他说:我们以后就是邻居了。

:) Google has a special search function for scientific publications, patents and the like, which is called Google Scholar. It's very useful. And the grammar on the search results should be better than what people write in blog posts.

March 09, 2011 at 03:42 PM

不用谢. Don't worry too much about the grammar. If you listen to lots of Chinese, you'll start to pick it up naturally.

I think the Chinese themselves have become a bit sloppy sometimes in distinguishing between these "de"s when writing - probably especially so on the internet.

BTW, what is google scholar? Actually, you don't need to answer that - I guess I can just google it!

Profile picture
cinnamonfern
March 09, 2011 at 11:05 AM

Thanks for all the corrections! I wish my grammar was stronger - it would make this easier.

And for this one I think you're right and it should be 得, not 的. I checked Google Scholar and 用的也 doesn't show up at all.

Profile picture

March 08, 2011 at 07:03 PM

Dilu: 这个其实是从日本里面翻译【前】中文的。以前我们用【的也】比较少。

【前】= 成 (翻译成中文 - translate INTO Chinese)

【的也】- I agree with you. Maybe strictly speaking this de should be 得 - but I'm not sure (not big on grammar). 的 is commonly used in this type of sentence by Chinese on the internet but that doesn't necessarily mean it's technically correct.

March 08, 2011 at 01:39 PM

Haha - I spoke too soon. This one was harder! :D Someone please double-check Dilu's first and second lines for me. I'm not sure about them, particularly the last one because though the words seem ok to me, I can't tell if the grammar makes sense.

Dilu: 这个其实是从日本里面翻译【前】中文的。以前我们用【的也】比较少。

Dilu: 是的。现在人们原来有多的使用这样一个词组。多多关照。

John: Alright, so “look out for us”, something like that?

Dilu: Something like that.

John: Ok, 多多关照. And this is…this is pretty polite.

John: 喝茶。

Dilu: 对。喝茶,聊聊。

John: Okay, but they’re not interested in that. They just wanted to give a cake, right?

Dilu: 他们说:不用来,谢谢。我们刚刚搬来。请多多关照。

John: Okay, ”刚刚搬来”. Is that the same as “刚搬来”?

Dilu: 是一样的。

John: Okay, 谢谢谢谢, why do we have two 谢谢’s?

Dilu: 因为他非常客气。

John: Okay.

Dilu: 客气的时候我们就 with double 东西。

John: What does she say?

Dilu: “这是我自己做的蛋糕。请你尝尝。”

John: Ok, so she’s giving the neighbor the whole cake, is that right?

Dilu:应该是吧。

John: So usually when I hear 尝尝, it’s like ‘have a try’ – like ‘take a bite of my food’.

Dilu: 对对对。

John: But in this case it’s, “I’m giving you the cake, uh, try it sometime…”

Dilu: 对对对。

John: Now what about the “是”?

Dilu: 这是这遍省略了一个“是”。

John: So they omitted it. But you could put it back in, right?

John: Yeah, so this is a pattern you frequently have when you’re clarifying information about past events.
