ò，nǐ kàn zuǒbiān yī gè shìzìpáng，yòubiān yī gè dāndú de dān zì，zhè ge zì a niàn“ chán”。
Well, see - on the left is the 'shi' radical and on the right is the 'dan' character from 'alone.' It's read, 'chan.'

禅这个字很难解释，它是一种智慧，而且有着非常深非常广的意义。我来说一个小故事吧，看你能不能明白。达摩是中国禅宗祖师，有一天他问自己的弟子：一滴水怎样才能不干涸？弟子们想来想去啊，都回答不出。
chán zhè ge zì hěn nán jiěshì，tā shì yīzhǒng zhìhuì，érqiě yǒuzhe fēicháng shēn fēicháng guǎng de yìyì。wǒ lái shuō yī gè xiǎo gùshi ba，kàn nǐ néngbùnéng míngbai。Dámó shì Zhōngguó chánzōng zǔshī，yǒu yī tiān tā wèn zìjǐ de dìzǐ：yī dī shuǐ zěnyàng cái néng bù gānhé？dìzǐ men xiǎngláixiǎngqù a，dōu huídá bù chū。
This word is very difficult to explain. It's a kind of way of approaching things. It's both very deep and very broad. I'll tell you a story and see if you understand. Once there was a Chan master named Bodhidharma. One day he asked his pupils, 'How could a single drop of water never dry up'? His pupils thought about it long and hard, but none of them could come up with an answer.
