It would be really great if it was actually possible to use this website in China without using a VPN. Why on earth can you not get a mirrored hosting solution in mainland?

If a man describes him self as "guai" it sounds a little bit gay!

Yes "are you fluent" I really don't even know what that means anymore. It's a strange word. Thank you but my Chinese is just very average, my listening is allot better than my speaking. It helps that I live in China in an area with very, very few foreigners and I enjoy chatting with people. I just did the films for fun. No money! Its' interesting because I would never be able to write Chinese subtitles for an English film - maybe in 4 years or so I could. Some good films for you to watch would be:

A Brighter Summer Day

The Terroizers

YI Yi

A Summer at Grandpas

Some of them use a touch of dialect every so often. I have no idea what your Chinese is like - maybe better than mine, im not sure. Let me know how you get one! Speak soon¬

Thanks for your reply. On his comment "linguists estimate..." I have no idea where he got that figure from - However, I completely disagree a with it - What exactly is a basic vocabulary? I do obsessively count my words learnt and currently have a vocab of under 10,000 words. However, I have no problem understanding 95% of what I watch on the TV and have even written English subtitles for various Chinese films (for fun) It just irritates me when I read things like "10,000 words, basic blah" because it is a real turnoff for people who begin learning languages.

Interesting - so after writing that post in which John claimed he had a vocab of 10,000 Chinese words he only managed to score a 7 on the old style HSK test - the top score being an 11. Bearing in mind the top level test contains 8840 words. Another example of people overestimating there vocabulary sizes and chatting it large on the net!

I'm always a bit suspicious regarding peoples claimed vocabulary sizes, especially over the internet. A vocabulary of 10,000 words in any language is not regarded as a basic vocab - in fact a text analysis of most books would show you this. Only seriously hardcore books, regarding poltics, economics etc would start to break over the 9000 unique word point. Having a large vocab in any language does not make you fluent, your ability to speak and listen does. What I would be most interested in seeing would be a video of John or Kamil D speaking Chinese on the spot!

Sofa, Anyway - at one point I really thought that HSK 6 was the be all and end all of Chinese it contains 5000 words.... Yet there are still soo many intermediate lessons that contain new vocab I did not study in HSK 6. That's one of the many reasons Chinese Pod is great~ keep it going guys.
