October 1, 2009 at 10:09 AMI completely agree with andr3y concerning the un-arbitrariness of "guo". I have the impressen that the second syllable in Chinese is more often than not chosen at least with a hint of meaning. So, of course the meaning of "fruit" is related to result, it's the result of a season's growing. So it makes perfect sense to choose excactly "guo" for words like if, result and effect, as all three of them are cause-effect related. Strangely over and over again Chinese teachers have tried to convince me of the arbitrariness, as ChinesePod now also has. I am far from being convinced. Chinese word-creating is too cunning and witty to allow too much of arbitrariness.
