January 25, 2009 at 8:46 AMHi, all!
Thanks for the lesson :)
I have a quick question about pronunciation. In the word for luck - xing4yun4 -
is the u in yun a "u" or a ü" with the dots?
Sometimes the "ü" (with the dots) is marked when writing/reading the pinyin, but sometimes it is absent. How do we know when to pronounce "u" as the "oo"-like sound, and when to prounce the "ü" as the "yoo"-like sound if it is not marked?
Is the Y-U combination like the X-U combination? Isn't the "u" in "xu" always a "ü"? What other consonant + ü blends does this rule apply to?
Thanks! :)

November 29, 2008 at 10:09 AMI spent a semester studying abroad in Beijing, and I love the Beijing accent!
I'm not very good at imitating it, but as long as people aren't speaking too quickly, I think 北京话 is easier to understand than other accents (like the Taiwanese accent).
My favorite "儿" word is 有名儿- you3mingr2 (famous)!

November 29, 2008 at 8:42 AM大家好!我是薄纯。(Bo2Chun2)
这里有人知道怎么explain薄纯?
What are the character components and radicals that make up my Chinese name?
How do I express that in Chinese?
谢谢!

November 17, 2008 at 11:36 AMHi!
Does anybody know how to use 平常? Is it the same as 通常? (Drzen also asked this question.)
I thought 平常 was used the same way as 通常, but my dictionary has two definitions for it: one is "usually" the other is "rarely" - these have very different meanings in English.
So, how to use 平常 and what does it mean?
