i think that a good way to explain it is to reference languages such as spanish and italian. For example for me, its easier to learn ch and q . basically q is a sharper ch in spanish like chancho (pig) just a very sharp ch. and pin yin ch would be a softer sort of like in the word check in english its not sh but not the spanish ch or italian c.
