johnb, It could be that 洒盐 is used for spreading salt in China, because as I recall, the truck I saw two years ago was actually spreading a liquid on the street, perhaps dissolved salt solution, which seemed very effective at keeping the road clear (but there was not as much snow then as recently).

Bazza, reading for me was not too hard with the vocabulary help, but listening comprehension without the script, even after having read the script a couple of hours ago, was quite difficult (understood maybe 30%)...

Wonderful lesson and discussion between John and Jenny! In the expansion exercises, we have: 上海一直是个很有活力的城市。 (Shanghai has always been a very vibrant city.) Does the following have the same meaning, or not? It would seem this expresses the vibrancy more clearly. What is the difference between 估计 and 猜 ? Is 在外地 more commonly used for being away from home than 出门在外?

In exercises, screen 3, I think that the answer to both question 2 and 4 is 无聊, so there doesn't seem to be a question with 幽默 as the answer.

I learned 海 by itself as "sea", where 海洋 is ocean. Is 海 the more commonly spoken form for "sea" and 海洋 either a formal or written form?
