May 6, 2009 at 1:21 AMI just stumbled across Alan Watts' "Cloud-Hidden, Whereabouts Unknown: A mountain journal" (wasn't even looking for it, I thought it was in a box somewhere), and there's a translation of this poem on the flyleaf. What an amazing connection, I hadn't thought about that stuff in years -- my freshman year in college I read everything I could get my hands on by Watts. Ah, youth.

April 30, 2009 at 12:24 AMBill, when I saw the last line I also immediately thought of that book, which I read as a callow freshman at UC Santa Cruz in the mid 70s. Which, of course, immediately brought to mind Jonathan Richman's line about the rooming house on Venice Beach, which is filled with "followers of Watts and Leary". 唐诗真博大精深！
