@bodawei - so if we get drunk we should drive home?!

That reminds me of a lecturer who seemed to be pushing us onto harder stuff by saying that tobacco and alcohol are far more dangerous than cocaine. I don't think he realised what he was saying...d'oh.

Cuckold is Shakespearian English. Not in general usage these days, other than by Shakespeare's modern readers! :D

pretzellogic: Britain consists of Scotland (much to their annoyance), England and Wales, the UK is all of those plus Northern Ireland, hence the full name the 'United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland'. Now you know.

Like Matt_c, I also discovered these eye exercises 5-6 years ago and I still do them now, but a longer version. Recently I've discovered some 'Western' ones from an American prof.

Amber, do you have a link to the new exercises by any chance?

On the food topic: I've had bird's nest. We ate it with coconut milk, honey and almond oil, which you add yourself. It basically has a texture like rice noodles. I've also eaten snake and toad in the south of China (and saw the killing process of the snake). A guy from northern China who was eating with us was a bit creeped out.

And I've never heard the term 'fleece' in this context (in the expansion exercises). Guess Chinese isn't all I'm learning here!

By the way, quick note: 'highway robbery' would be 'daylight robbery' in British English.

Ha! Ignore the advice of pedantic old Chinese ladies at your own peril! I and Chinese partner were warned by nainai not to consume cold things after fried/spicy food. Partner said: 'Ho-ho, we have iron stomachs from our eating habits in Europe.' Then, in Shanghai we ate too many of those dreaded deep-fried dough sticks and *I* drank cold soy milk (he had warm soy milk). A few hours later I had indigestion so bad I got a fever and was in bed til next day. I didn't recover fully for more than a week (hiccuping).
