乘坐 does not mean seat, but mean what vehicle you take. For example, 我乘坐飞机, 我乘坐火车,我乘坐出租车,等等. You also can only say 乘. 我乘飞机,我乘船,我乘火车,我乘出租车, etc.

In my hometown, in Hubei Province, wives are also called as 堂客. In ancientry, women were not allowed to go out of ( 抛头露面), and appear in parlor not so often. That may be one reason of why they are called 堂客.
An informal address for husband is 当家的. Because husband is usually regarded as 一家之主.
Of course, nowadays, woman can also 撑起半边天.
