Another useful tool is the radicals plus the strokes that you can find on http://www.mdbg.net. The radical is the main element in a character, it gives you a direction. You see the radical in the box.  The meaning of the character can be totally different. There are a little over 200 radicals.

Just try to remember some radicals and memorising the characters will become much easier.

shén  here the radical is on the left side and means

rén = man

on the right side of the character you see

4画 this means total of 4strokes

人亻 + 2

人亻  this is the radical

The full character is the radical plus 2 strokes。 Other characters with the ren radical

你 (= you+ 5 strokes

他 ( = he) + 3 strokes

们 (men = indicates plural)+ 3 strokes

们  (men = they)

Once you know it starts with the ren radical, it is easier to memories the rest.

I find skritter too time consuming and prefer to use http://www.mdbg.net

you can either write the english or write chinese/ copy in

1。on the leftside you see translate choose this

2。 put the character (  两 = liang)in the empty box, push chinese-english。  then you get the translator, go down and you see in green liǎng, push and it will extend further.  You will see a pencil, select that and it will show how to write a character. in one box you can add the whole vocabulary of one lesson. (from the pdf)

This is a wonderful website. there is also a possibiltiy to search combinations with the asterix

c:*两*

两者 liǎngzhě both sides; 两句 liǎng  (say) a few words

check it out!
