Hello all,

We hear you loud and clear about 把. This is a fairly complex structure that would be difficult to explain in a Qing Wen. But (apologies to fellow animal lovers ;-) there is more than one way to skin a cat. This is an important grammatical topic that clearly  needs to be discussed.

In the meantime, Jiaojie explains:

把 sentences involve dealing with or disposing of things. There needs to be a result, so there should be a 了 or other resultative complement after the verb. And the object of a 把 sentence must be definite, so you can't say "an apple,” or “an egg." You have to say "that apple" or "that egg."

他把一个苹果吃 should be: 他把那个苹果吃了。He ate that apple.
他把一辆欧宝开 should be: 他把那辆欧宝开走了。He drove away in that Opel.
我把一个鸡蛋吃过了 should be: 我把那个鸡蛋吃了。I ate that egg.

If you don't use the 把 structure, you can say:

他吃了一个苹果。He ate an apple.
他开走了一辆欧宝。 I drove away in an Opel.
我吃了一个鸡蛋。 I ate an egg.

Hi guikeli

Reigau explained the issue of 丢工作 and 丢事业 very nicely. Here is a little more information from Jiaojie:

A 事业 has a definite goal, range and method, and has an impact on the development of a society. For example, 革命事业, 教育事业 。

工作 is when people do mental or physical labor, a job. This appears in phrases like 找工作. If you say 丢了事业, that means that you will never work again in this field. But if you say 丢了工作, that means that the person has lost this particular job.

Hi all,

Here are today's poems.

泠泠七弦上,静听松风寒。

línglíng qī xiánshàng , jìngtīngsōngfēnghán

古调虽自爱,今人多不弹。

gǔdiào suī zìài , jīnrén duō bùtán

鸣筝金粟柱,素手玉房前。

míng zhēng jīn sù zhù , sù shǒu yùfáng qián

欲得周郎顾,时时误拂弦。

yù dé zhōu láng gù , shíshí wùfú xián

Can any poddies play the guzheng or guqin? If so, can you share a video or sound file with us?

Hi eupnea63355

Thanks for your kind comments. I am very pleased to think that people are getting into Chinese poetry. And don't worry-- when the PDF becomes available, it will be a supplement to the plain text.

Hi zhenlijiang,

What a great ambition. Please do let us see the poem when you are done.

Hi helenxiong,

热烈欢迎你。 如果想要学习英文的话,你也不妨看看我们sister website.

Hi anderslearmonth

We do not have a JapanesePod yet. But why don't you explore the site-- you may find that Chinese is really cool.

We'll look forward to your comments and questions on the message boards.

Hi lotsofwordsandnospaces

Lao Wang is an upright citizen, not a finger-cutter!

And 大熊 is a bit affectionate, but it does not have this kind of implication:

Bears

Hi thenrik

The problem is not actually with creating the PDF but with publishing it with the lesson. I know this sounds odd, but the system will be improved soon.

I am at least as eager for this change as any of the poddies ;-)

Hi forth_tone

可以这么说! 掰 is used for hard things.

And the character can also be used when couples break up-- convenient, as it looks like 分手!

Hi alexyzye

Interesting question. Jiaojie and Connie explained to me just now that people would rarely say this directly to someone's face-- today's dialogue is a special situation because it is a gangster.

More commonly, it would be used behind someone's back. Person A thinks is bothered by Person B, so A says to Person C 我一定要给他(Person B)一点颜色看看.
