March 7, 2009 at 2:21 PMHi Changye,
对,我相信你说的话,啤酒可以快成为坏,好像黄马尿∶-)太阳的光辉将做啤酒坏,下边的课文更好解释:
How does a beer get skunky?
Skunked beer tastes like a skunk smells. It's commonly thought that subjecting beer to variations in temperature will skunk it. However, skunkiness in beer is caused not by heat, but by light.
Isohumulones, the bitter compounds in hops used in beer, are very sensitive to natural light (artificial light affects them, too, but not nearly as fast). "If light reaches them, they break down very quickly and react with traces of sulfur compounds in the beer," says Charles Bamforth, chair of the Food Science and Technology Department at the University of California-Davis and a top researcher in brewing science. This process produces MBT (3-methyl-2-butene-1-thiol), which not only smells like skunk, it's also chemically very similar to the noxious compound in a skunk's spray. And it's potent. Some people can detect MBT at concentrations as low as one-billionth of a gram in a 12-ounce beer.
Cans offer the best protection against damaging light waves, and brown bottles rate a close second. "If you have really strong light for a very long time, then even in brown glass, the beer goes skunky," says Bamforth. "But in a clear glass or a green glass, it'll happen very, very quickly"-as in a matter of seconds, not hours. Pilsners, traditionally bottled in green glass, are very susceptible to skunking.
Allowing chilled beer to get warm and then trying to chill it again still isn't a good idea. Heat speeds up oxidation, and the beer begins to taste like cardboard. To preserve the flavors in your beer, always store it in a cool, dark place, like, say, your refrigerator.

March 7, 2009 at 2:12 PMHi Bill,
On one side the 汉字 and 拼音, and on the other a picture of the meaning or concept.
真是个好主意!现在学习汉语的人,such flashcards would certainly lighten the pain for the cup half empty crowd and enhance the pleasure for the cup half full crowd . BTW, at livemocha site, they teach Chinese using photos accompanied with pinyin, hanyu, and english.

"What we all really need is a 妈妈 to help us dissolve the unnecessary link between concept and word"
你说的话很对了!

March 6, 2009 at 4:23 PMAs a recent poddie, comparing the old format with this one, I think this format is better in that more time is spent to explain the usage of Chinese characters in the sentences versus interpreting the sentences. Because of the differences in word order between English and Chinese sentences, hearing and understanding Chinese is not as difficult as speaking or writing Chinese. I think it helps a lot to poddies trying to understand Chinese syntax and the usage of certain words when John asks Jenny why the characters are arranged or used as such in the sentences. For example, why the 酒 has been left out in 喝黑啤好 and asking Jenny for other examples of phrases with the 好 tacked on at the end.
I liked this show a lot!
ps baba, I understand your point of view when first time listening to the podcast on the run.

March 5, 2009 at 1:37 AMhi baba,
I think interpretation will depend on context, word meaning, and syntax. 拿 means 'hold' or 'get' and and not 'give' so the interpretation cannot be:
麻烦你帮我拿一下那个
'trouble you help me give that' instead of 'trouble you help me get that'.
I think the expansion sentence translation is a bit inaccurate. It should be 'Could I trouble you to get me that" instead of 'Could I trouble you to give me that". But then, I'm not the Chinese wordsmith here ... Changye, where art thou?

March 4, 2009 at 2:43 PMhi baba,
according to my dictionary, another meaning for 拿 is 'to get'
麻烦你帮我拿一下那个 translated literally would be
trouble you help me get that
So, another translation into proper English sentence would be:
"Could I trouble you to get me that?"

OK it did come up, however in the same window.. I'll try edit to have it come up different window
different window
One episode of Brooke Hogan's reality show showed her installing a poledance in her apartment. Apparently, poledancing exercise is quite popular in Miami. Naturally, Hulk was not pleased at all to see the pole in daughter's apartment.
