I even knew about the Yen Fu (严复) concept from a previous lesson- 0251 Translation Issues, an Upper-Intermediate lesson, but forgot the 达 part of the three concepts...it seems the hardest to get my head around, but maybe thats because I haven't read the original article. Thanks also for sharing your opinion of Victor Mair, I will look out for his books. (I have the Hendricks book). Also enjoyed seeing the Paper Republic and your contributions there. I thought the poems there were very apt for this issue of translation. I think Martin Luther King Jr. would be interested and happy that when we remember him we talk about the compassionate pursuit of justice, how he inspired us, and the pursuit of clarifying our thinking. I'd like to think he would have been spending some of his time on ChinesePod. He so clearly loved learning and widening his horizons.

I have this feeling that I will someday get to 上海 and be disappointed because I'm not seeing it with your framing, angle, composition, color and lighting. You really bring out the qualities of different characters...from the great cast of Chinese/Spanish Pod down to the Chinese Mafia. Thank you for sharing your eye for beauty with us.

Bokane, I read Jenny's words as a total complement... and I know what she means...I didn't comment on some of the conversations you were having on the 88groups, but I was very impressed with your erudition. I guess you do know that she was giving you a nice complement by the smile emoticon that you included after your pedant comment, but just in case you have any doubts, your knowledge is appreciated. When you say 信达雅，do you mean faithfulness to the meaning of the text informs or makes for elegance, and/or are you also implying that faithfulness always trumps elegance/beauty/flow? Or do I not even have a clue? If both,(of the first two) what do you do with the Dao or with the great poets, whose full content can't be clearly and completely translated in any text resembling the size or patterning of the original? Again, I want to thank you both. I feel like I have been let in on a great conversation about translation and would love to have this go even deeper, whatever form that takes.

I wonder whether this is distracting or how it affects the Chinese reader. Jenny, or anyone else, what do you think? I haven't read them both all the way through yet, very excited to have both of these to look at. Thank You both!
