Go now! :) Yunnan was my favorite place I traveled in China...beautiful area, weather's great, people are awesome, and THE FOOD! Pretty good Muslim restaurants in Kunming too, as I recall.

Aw man! Just hanging out on CPod makes me want to go back to China, but this lesson hits HOME!

I'm not even close with Chinese, but I got there with Spanish using a combination of living in the country, trying to spend time overwhelmingly with friends who don't speak English, and reading to bring up my vocab. For a year I tried almost full immersion, refusing to listen to songs , read the news, or form friendships that weren't in Spanish. They say that for languages linguistically similar to your own (English --> French/Spanish/etc.), 2-3 years living in a country that speaks that language should do it, and for a language linguistically dissimilar (English -->Russian/Arabic/Chinese/etc.), 5-7 years should do it. The time probably varies depending on your level of commitment and immersion.

For me, I'm having to figure out different techniques with Chinese. The music isn't really to my taste, and the nature of the language makes it difficult for me to do a lot of reading, as I did with Spanish. Also, I found it trickier to make friends who will speak to you only in Chinese.

I met a Canadian guy once traveling through Yunnan who had AMAZING command of Chinese using similar techniques to the ones I used for Spanish--he simply had a lifestyle that was in Chinese. He was traveling with a Korean friend who spoke better Chinese than English, and he did a lot of reading of Chinese magazines and such.

Dunno if that helps or not, but that's some of what I've seen work.

I was living last year in 阿根廷(Argentina), and it's the same way!  People are amazing about, even in the worst of rush hour subways (where, literally, people have been crushed) seats will be instantly given for children, pregnant ladies, and the elderly, even though you may have fought and hovered for that seat.  But back in the US (west coast) I notice that people will be surprised and almost taken aback if you give up your seat for them.  Interesting how it varies...
