(Very late reply) @ Shanghaichanges,  i believe there was a Cpod gathering not too long ago. I think I saw some pics on Chinesepod's facebook. Also check ShanghaiExpat.com

I just heard this interview with Charles and I must say congratulations! I know a lot of people who just want to quit their jobs and start a business like a café but who are too afraid to take that risk.

Great to hear John speaking again and great to continue hearing practical knowledge from your shows Jenny. These are good complements to the Chinese lessons.

zhenlijiang, I got it from "The Rape of Nanking" book and movie documentaries. But of course I know the numbers are unknown and controversial. Anyway I apologize for bringing that part up since I do know we have some Japanese studying on Cpod as well. If there was a delete button for comments then I would use it to clean things up a bit.

Thanks Shanghaichanges. I admit I did go off and drag it a bit too far. It's just that I thought ChinesePod would be the one place where we could learn about China, Chinese culture in addition to the language (Because I assumed everyone was here for that reason) without all the China bashing that is typical of anything China related outside of this site. I guess after a while I got tired of reading about "evil governments" while trying to learn more about culture instead.

oh man. Look what I started. I have a feeling this is going to be a long thread with Matt coming in later to delete and tell us to stay on topic.

Regardless of what was exactly meant by "authoritarianism" I'm saying that many Chinese I've met in China do not feel that way at all. Sure there are always people who complain about their goverments, especially in the liberal areas of any country.

Whether or not you're right about the CCP killing more Chinese than the Japanese did it would surprise me that they killed more than 300,000. Well at least it wasn't through rape, mutilation and humiliation - but perhaps I'm wrong again.

Freedom of speech in the comments section is fine but it becomes less enjoyable for some when it starts to take a political turn which I know is hard to avoid when it comes to these lessons. And I was simply trying to state my view of what I saw in China.

Well how you feel does not necessarily reflect how the Chinese people feel about this. I know many Chinese and overseas Chinese who are very excited about this. Just like people of any country, they are also patriotic. Yes, a marching army is like a country displaying it's flexing muscles, but is that so wrong? Perhaps the ones that feel like they're being bullied are foreigners, but why should they? No one is starting a war here.

I live in the US and see a lot of bad press about China especially when it comes to the military (even though China spends a fraction of its budget on that compared to the US). People can't escape the negativity of the media but it would be nice to AT LEAST be able to use ChinesePod without sparks of heat. The political rants on the lesson "Is China Scary" was bad enough for those who just want to learn Chinese and a bit of culture.

Hilarious video btw

It's inspiring to see young entrepreneurs succeed and even more so after finding out that the road to success wasn't always smooth. I side with Joe in that I also don't want to continue working for a large corporation for the rest of my life. I've had many ideas, and coincidentally have also thought about bringing miniature golf to China when I was on the golf course a while ago. Of course who ever acts on their ideas right? Well people like Joe do.

These suspense and story building lessons definitely make learning Chinese really interesting. The Lao Wang series is almost like a movie plot. Great ending! - or is it the end?

hey light487, I believe he is speaking with that high pitched voice because he is a eunuch (he's been missing something early in childhood that would ordinarily have contributed to a male's deep voice).
