Shanghai Taiyu Restaurant, 4215 Spring Mountain Rd. #B205 (in the Chinatown plaza). They were absolutely lovely people and very talented cooks. One caveat: They give a totally lame Americanized menu to anyone non-Chinese who walks through the door. You have to ask specially for the Shanghai-style menu, which is where all the good stuff is.

I just wanted to say that I finally had a chance to use this lesson! We were in Las Vegas last week and went to an excellent Shanghai-style restaurant. We had yellow fish, spareribs, and xiaolongbao! Great food, all of it. And what a thrill to be able to use my Chinese--the people who worked there were really encouraging to me and put me at ease even though I kept forgetting words. Thanks, guys, for making it possible!

Oh, dear--I'm having just this sort of problem identifying the owner of a store near here. I asked my friend what she thought, and she's mystified too. ChinesePod always has the most useful subject matter!

Hmm. I'll eat just about anything--I have even made my own homemade head cheese! But I still don't think I could ever cross the line into eating dog. Here, the poultry we raise are "cai4", but dogs are strictly "chong3wu4".

"mou ichidou itte kudasai" Oh, man, the memories. I had three semesters of Japanese in college, and I've lost almost all of it by now, but there are certain phrases that will always ring a bell. :-)

You use "jiao4" as a command? I only ever talk about barking in the negative...as in, I want them to stop making a fuss about the deer out in the yard! Although now that I think of it, I guess some people do teach their dogs to "shuo1". :-) Many thanks to ChinesePod for the canine lesson. I and my household of three dogs were waiting and hoping!

And actually, that's the same cao3 in "strawberry," isn't it? Nice.

I love those connections, too. I was super-psyched when cao3 showed up in the ice cream lesson and I remembered it from the colors song!
