it is kinda expletive;just an ending.
for example: i wanna sleep. we can say:我想睡觉（wǒ xiǎng shuì jiào).or you could add 了：我想睡觉了；it means nothing.

i dont think people use it often as nickname.hehe.very rare.but i love this nick name.

1.i think it is ok to use 亲爱的 as a formal sense,it is ok.and you also could use 宝贝(baby) to call your love.
2 .if you write to your love,you could say"爱你的xxx“（your lover xxx);or 宝贝照顾好自己哦 （take care of yourself pls)
if you write to your normal friend,it is okay to say "希望你天天开心，事事顺利啊！”（i hope you be happy everyday and things always be good)
that is my opinion,i hope it could be a little use for you.O(∩_∩)O~
