September 4, 2009 at 1:15 PMAbout these children's songs... how commonly known are they? I am a lao wai in the process of adopting a child from Taiwan. He will be about three years old when I get him. If I sing the "ba ba" song or the "ni wa wa" song, will he be likely to have heard them before? Will it put him at ease, or will he think I am insane?

April 8, 2009 at 11:46 PMLet's not be too hard on the Chinese, here. I have never been to China, but this kind of toilet is common all over the world. The worst toilet I have ever visited, by far, was in Russia. Heavy vodka drinking, unisex facilities and clogged floor drains do not mix. I have found squat toilets-- sometimes called "Turkish toilets"-- frequent in Russia, Morocco and France. As a student in France we called them Turkish trou (French for "hole"). Do they actually exist in Turkey, or is this like the fortune cookie thing...

April 1, 2009 at 12:27 AMI find the lessons at c-pod very well planned and pedagogically sound. So I'm thinking there is probably a specific reason why there is always faint music playing behind the speakers in the lesson podcasts. Can someone tell me what it is?

February 19, 2009 at 2:39 PMCan someone settle a dispute for me on the spit/vomit issue? In our local shopping mall, all the signage is in both English and Chinese. My husband says in the men's room there is a sign on the mirror that says "Don't vomit here!" and another over the trash can that says "Vomit here!" He can't read the Chinese on the sign, and I can't go in there. (Strangely, there are no such signs in the women's room. Take what you will from that...) I think it's possible that the English on the sign is wrong, and what it really means if "Don't spit here. Spit here." My husband thinks that, because there is a bar next door, they really mean vomit. What do you think?

February 19, 2009 at 2:20 PMThanks, John. I figured out my error. I was clicking straight on the PDF button from the screen that lists all lessons in chronological order. You have to click on the title of the lesson to open that lesson properly, then you get the appropriate gear to change the PDF to traditional characters.

February 18, 2009 at 2:22 PMIs traditional character support available to basic subscription users? I would like to see the lesson transcript in traditional characters. My limited membership doesn't give me access to the other stuff. I clicked on the gear like John said, and set it to "traditional characters", but I'm still seeing the transcript in simplified text.
