A great podcast, but some good points here. Re the spelling out of the pinyin, I personally could also do without it at this level. However, I still find that my sensitivity to picking up tones is not perfect. For me then the verbal reminders of the tones are very helpful and especially so if I am listening while driving and unable to check the tone of a character if I'm unsure.

"zhe wei mei nu" towards the end. I've not seen that before as a way of directly addressing someone in front of you. Is this a more formal way of addressing or initiating conversation with someone?
