March 21, 2008 at 1:34 AMWhen I was in Xinjiang province a few years ago several people asked if I was a Khazak or Uighur. I could not understand this at first because I am an Australian with English, Irish and German ancestry. After a few days walking around Urumqi I saw several local people with light hair and blue eyes. So many people assumed I was from one of the central asian ethnic groups.

March 8, 2008 at 1:40 AMIf you are having problems removing QQ from Win XP, run msconfig.exe, go to the startup tab and disable SPlus1, then manually delete any remaining files from the Tencent directories.

March 8, 2008 at 1:30 AMI used the english version of QQ in China for a year, but when I returned to Australia I could not login. Changed to the latest chinese version and it worked fine. Problem has something to do with the authentication protocol. If the chinese version does not display characters properly in win xp, go to control panel/regional & language options/advanced tab, and set language for non-unicode programs to chinese PRC.
Posted on: Registering with the Police Station
February 28, 2008 at 1:41 AMGreat lesson. Last year I had to register in a small village in southern Zhejiang. The local police had no idea how to do this as they had never registered a foreigner before. I sat in the police station for a couple of hours watching six officers trying to operate a computer, but they could not even login to the police website. Eventually an officer returned my passport and said he would bring my registration receipt to my residence the next day. He never showed up and I still dont know if I was ever registered!

Open the "Regional and Language Options" icon. Choose the "Languages" tab, and ensure the "Install files for East Asian languages". You may need your windows installation disk or you can download the language pack from the Microsoft website.
