I went hiking in the mountains north of Beijing last weekend and so had no trouble picturing the people in this dialogue plodding along the trail. Certainly a lot of the hikers kept yelling into the hills to hear the echo. My trip was smooth with one exception: the 老板 lao3 ban3 at the hostel I was staying in told me about a nice trail nearby where the entrance tickets were only 10 yuan. "It's prettier than the national park," (also nearby) he insisted. "All the students go there." I agreed and he drove me there. At the trailhead I discovered only a rusty, padlocked gate and no ticket booth. He said I should just pay him and that if I tried to go to the office and purchase a ticket myself, I'd be charged 40 yuan. I was suspicious and insisted that I'd buy the ticket myself once I got inside but as his objections got stronger and stronger, I decided to just avoid confrontation and pay him. On the trail I talked with some students who, of course, had not paid anything. Oh well-- I considered it the fee for him driving me there.
On the subject of cpod not teaching elementary learners every synonym from the dictionary: One of the many reasons I love Chinesepod is that it helps me AVOID sounding like the dictionary. Teaching "high frequency" words and phrases is what cpod does best, especially at this level.

May 9, 2008 at 1:16 AMphettu-- 这儿 (zher4) indicates that we are talking about a place. In the context of the dialogue 你们这儿 (ni3men zher4) means "at this restaurant." I am PUMPED about this series!

May 2, 2008 at 4:51 AMinteresting show. The cab drivers here in Beijing are often listening to cross talk on the radio. Hearing it makes me wish my Chinese were better but it sounds like even it were perfect, I still might not 'get' the humor. My experience with being a foreign teacher at a university is that, yes, the school tells you to make up your classes on the weekends before the holiday but if you don't do it, they tend to turn a blind eye.
