Posted on: How Many Zeroes?
April 6, 2009 at 2:06 PMIf anyone's interested, here are Chinese fraud-proof numbers (0-10):
零 líng
壹 yī
贰 èr
参 sān
肆 sì
伍 wǔ
陆 liù
柒 qī
捌 bā
玖 jiǔ
拾 shí
And the big ones:
佰 bǎi (hundred)
仟 qiān (thousand)
萬 wàn (ten thousand)
億 yì (hundred million)
兆 zhào (trillion)
So if you're depositing 35000块 into your bank account, you'd write 参萬伍仟 (sān wàn wǔ qiān)on the deposit slip.

April 3, 2009 at 12:05 AMNice explanation chenggwo. I've never thought of 是 shì as linking two nouns - I never know when to use it, and that will help.
In regard to 很 hěn,you also see 好 hǎo often used in its place:
那碗汤好烫。nà wǎn tāng hǎo tàng.

April 2, 2009 at 9:07 AMThanks for looking into it Pete.
It's not really a big deal in the big scheme of life, but there were some good comments from Henning and Zhenlijiang on the Activity Stream thread. I was really looking forward to hearing Cpod's replies. There are at least 10 comments missing from that thread. I still hope Cpod responds to the original questions posed there.
Surely (as bababardwan mentioned), Cpod makes a daily backup tape of the site. At least I would hope so.

April 2, 2009 at 5:55 AMHi Pete, no problem that there was a maintenance outage. Although, it would be nice if Cpod could notify us prior to scheduled maintenance. That way, we won't schedule our time to use Cpod when the site is down. Maybe an email notification?
It wasn't a big problem that the site was down, but the aftermath has been a problem, at least for me. Aside from the handful of minor glitches on the site, many of my posts for the past 24 hours have magically disappeared. There are about 10 or more comments missing from this thread, and my latest Vocabulary Picture of the Day thread has completely disappeared!
Anyway to retrieve them?

April 2, 2009 at 12:04 AMBill, there was a period of maintenance yesterday afternoon (SH time)...there are a handful of glitches that I've noticed. Hopefully the tech team is up bright and early today.

March 29, 2009 at 1:54 AMWow, a N&F where Jenny and John get in a fight and swear at each other ;)
Nice touch with the bleeps.

March 28, 2009 at 3:47 PMRJ, Lake Erie perch (Sandusky-caught, near you I think) is the best fish I have ever eaten! I haven't found anything better, even here in Taiwan.
I found the use of 跑 interesting in this sentence:
你一说话,鱼就跑了。
As soon as you talk, the fish run away.
Like John said, I think we'd be more likely to say "swim away" in English, but I didn't realize until now that 跑 also means "to escape."
有趣。

March 24, 2009 at 8:15 AMP.S. To those who use Cpod's free services, that's great and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it....as long as your criticisms are constructive and respectful to other users and Cpod staff.
i.e. Don't be a whining little baby like Licha.
(My above comments are not very respectful, but I believe to earn respect you must give respect...clearly Licha never does, and it's gotten quite old, like a broken record playing the same annoying song over and over).

March 24, 2009 at 5:29 AMlicha, if you want to be a cheap a$$ and "steal" your "conversational" learning without paying for an upgraded subscription, don't complain. Okay?
Beggars can't be choosers.
(I know you've been waiting for me to post a comment, so I didn't want to disappoint you).

April 6, 2009 at 11:25 PMI think some banks allow you to just write the number (1,2,3...), but my understanding is that most require the complex Chinese version.
If you're writing the standard numbers (一,二,三...), they're pretty easy to change. Example: You could easily add an extra line to 二 to make it 三。
