Whatever the Christian child/ descendant may believe, carrying out these harmless rites (which DON'T include any element of consecrating anything to any idols, or worshipping) is something that mattered to the deceased. He or she sincerely believed that he or she would need such provisions in the afterlife; most Chinese will not rest until they have an assurance that this will be done for them. I would be happy to carry out such rites, no problem at all, out of consideration of the person when he/she was still a living person.

April 8, 2008 at 1:40 PMAiyah, it actually made me smile. Singapore is so tiny -- a little diamond shaped island, with the maximum distance between two opposite corners being 42km -- that sometimes I wonder how we can call ourselves a "country". ;-)
