November 30, 2011 at 12:40 PMMaybe this sounds hokey, but I just had a moment there where I realised the Significance Of The Internet. I mean, I'm on the intenet, studying Chinese, listening to a podcast, reading a discussion about how internet shopping is causing the monopolization of trade and threatening the very existence of bookstores (not to mention the Kindle, which couldn't function without the internet). We're living in heady times.

August 17, 2011 at 12:13 PMThat's funny, cause I'm sure I've put my foot in it in similar ways. I guess its easy to make such mistakes when you're learning a language 'cause you always want to practice. I think I make the most fatuous small talk in Chinese, for instance!

August 17, 2011 at 12:10 PMMan, I think we've got enough on our plates discerning the appropriate use of Chinese phrases without getting into English ones too!
But yeah, well done Jenny for saying 'balls', and well done listeners for not being offended this time.

August 11, 2011 at 8:11 AMFor pity's sake, cut Dilu some slack. It can't be easy to walk the Chinesepod line of being informative and academically rigorous but also hip, fun and casual, whilst all the time remaining inoffensive!

August 4, 2011 at 8:11 AMForget the grammar, let's discuss where the guy in the dialogue went wrong: I don't think it matters whether he said 'Can I sit next to you?' or 'Can I sit here?', the sentiment is the same. Then, his opening line, 'Are you drinking alone?', was a bad one. If someone's drinking alone they don't want it pointed out to them. Hence, he didn't get the girl's number.

July 19, 2011 at 10:50 AMWell, even fairy tales set in forests are kind of scary. Hansel and Gretel? Little Red Riding Hood? Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs (the witch, specifically). They're just inherently scary places, I guess. Before I reject civilization and retire to a shack in the forest I'm going to work on my crossbow skills...
