Great to hear you are back, Jenny! You sound very invigorated; motherhood has had a major effect on your life, for sure. Hope all is going well!

my parents spoke shanghainese all the time. my mom was from Wuxi but the dialect very similar to shanghainese. somehow i just learned english however i understand everyday spoken shanghainese even after being away from the dialect for so long now. there is a kindred spirit among shanghainese folks, sort of what NY'ers share as well.

I'm sad that the Shanghai lessons are ending! Thanks for the introduction, though. Listening to Shanghainese for me is going back to my childhood in New York City where I grew up with my Shanghainese parents -  but I was a terrible student of the dialect, reason being my 保姆 spoke Yiddish and English to me. I'm a shanghainese/jewish/chinese american!

I believe it includes the voice of 周璇, Shanghai's most famous songstress from it's heyday of the 1930's. 马路天使 highly recommended viewing if you can find the DVD. (no Shanghainese though, all in putonhua).

Gladly welcome the shanghainese lessons! Reason being my family is Shanghainese. I heard it spoken growing up but never learned to speak, instead learned English as my 母语. However I can understand basic shanghainese dialogue.
